Dog Age Calculator by Size

Dog age depends on size because small, medium, large, and giant dogs often age at different rates after maturity. This calculator uses the same first two years for all dogs, then adds more human years per dog year for larger dogs.

Small dogs

20 lbs or less. Adult years add about 4 human years per dog year.

Medium dogs

21-50 lbs. Adult years add about 5 human years per dog year.

Large dogs

51-100 lbs. Adult years add about 6 human years per dog year.

Giant dogs

100 lbs+. Adult years add about 7 human years per dog year.

Dog Age Chart

A dog age chart gives a quick estimate, but the calculator is better because it adjusts for size. Larger dogs often reach senior life stages earlier than small dogs.

Cat Age Calculator

Cat age is usually estimated with one formula: 15 human years for the first year, 9 for the second, then about 4 for each year after. Cats do not need a size selector in this calculator.

When Is a Dog or Cat Considered Senior?

Pets are usually considered senior when age-related health and behaviour changes become more likely. Giant and large dogs may enter senior years earlier, while many cats and small dogs stay active for longer.

Dog and Cat Age FAQ

Is the seven dog years rule accurate?

No. The seven-year rule is easy to remember, but it misses fast puppy development and the way dog size changes adult ageing.

Do large dogs age faster?

Generally yes. Large and giant dogs often reach senior stages earlier than small dogs, so the calculator uses higher adult-year estimates.

How old is a 10-year-old dog in human years?

A 10-year-old dog is about 56 human years if small, 64 if medium, 72 if large, and 80 if giant using this estimate.

How old is a 15-year-old cat in human years?

A 15-year-old cat is about 76 human years using the common cat age formula.

Is this calculator exact?

No calculator can be exact for every pet. Breed, health, weight, lifestyle, and veterinary history can all affect ageing.
